Rotary International and the Lexington Rotary Club believes in education, at all levels, as a powerful means to change individual’s lives which in turn leads to positive change throughout society. For over 50 years the club has recognized top students in their senior year graduating from local high schools by awarding scholarships totaling in excess of $300,000. The awards to high school students are known as the All Fayette County Team and the overall honoree is known as the Rotary Scholar. The purpose of the awards is to stimulate and encourage excellence in scholarship by rewarding and giving public recognition to specific academic achievements. The scholarships are based solely on academic merit.
The Ollie Hurst Scholarship Award is presented to a university student who has demonstrated academic excellence as well as participation in campus and community affairs. The Tommy Bell Award is made to a high school student in recognition of the outstanding athlete-scholar, chosen annually by county-wide high school principals and coaches and members of the sports media. This award is in memory of attorney, NFL referee, and humanitarian Tommy Bell who was for many years an active Lexington Rotarian.
The John Bryden Great Teacher Award is presented to an outstanding teacher in the Fayette County Schools. It honors the memory of our own “Jack” Bryden, long-time academic dean at Transylvania University, past-president of the club and former chairman of the Scholarship Committee.
