Rotarians are privileged to hear from Laura Prewitt, Executive Director of Surgery on Sunday (SOS).  While the history and impact of SOS and The Rotary Club of Lexington’s connection is likely known to many, it bears repeating.

SOS was the brainchild of Dr. Andrew Moore, II, a prominent plastic surgeon in Lexington, and the fulfillment of a longstanding dream to bring critical surgical services to persons in the community who were falling through the cracks of the medical system. Over his almost four decades serving the community, Dr. Moore and his brothers had compassionately aided numerous individuals who found themselves caught in the gaps of accessible healthcare services. These were people who earned just enough to disqualify them from assistance yet lacked the financial means to make surgical procedures a viable option. During the early stages of his career, Dr. Moore could easily secure free surgical services for these individuals by simply requesting that the hospital waive the expenses for the patients. His unwavering mission was to ensure that the working poor could access outpatient services that would otherwise elude them due to financial limitations. However, as the healthcare landscape changed, he found this model no longer worked.

From this environment rose SOS, a nonprofit with the simple yet eloquent mission of providing “medically necessary outpatient surgeries at no cost to income-eligible, uninsured or underinsured individuals who do not qualify for federal or state assistance.”

Laura Prewitt, a seasoned professional with a rich background in the equestrian world and business finance knew she wanted to make a more meaningful impact on her community. Her years as the former Executive Director of the Kentucky Horse Park and her work with Breeders’ Cup, she has a deep connection to the equine world in Kentucky. However, her journey took a significant turn when she sought a more profound purpose in her career.

After realizing her desire for a more meaningful change, she transitioned to becoming the Executive Director of SOS.  This transition allowed her to utilize her extensive business network and management skills to support a cause she deeply believes in. By rallying support from within her network, she strives to amplify the reach and impact of SOS’s services.

Laura lives on a farm in Fayette County and has two children in the medical field. Carter, is embarking on his first year of surgical residency at the University of Louisville and Caroline is pursuing her master’s in healthcare administration at the University of Kentucky.

Laura, welcome to the Rotary Club of Lexington!
