Roger Weaver’s fascination with coin collecting began when he was five years old. Like many new collectors, he started with Lincoln cents. As his collection grew, he founded Commonwealth Coin, Inc. in 1986 and spent weekends buying and selling coins at shows as a part-time dealer. He continued operating the business until 1996, when his professional responsibilities no longer allowed him the time. Weaver was also an early seller of coins on eBay in the early 2000s.
Following his retirement in 2020, Weaver and his wife, Linda, established My Old Kentucky Coin & Collectibles, LLC, and began buying and selling coins, jewelry, and other collectibles full time. They participate in approximately 35 coin shows each year throughout Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, West Virginia, Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina.
Weaver has been a member of the American Numismatic Association for 40 years. Numismatics is the study or collection of coins, currency, and related objects. He is also a member of the Bluegrass Coin Club, a lifetime member of the South Carolina Numismatic Association, a submitting member of PCGS coin grading service, and a dealer member of several state numismatic associations and coin clubs.
He continues to specialize in Lincoln cents and has several customers who rely on him to find key coins for their collections. Over the years, he has attended numerous educational presentations about coin collecting and specific areas of numismatics, broadening his understanding of the hobby and its growth. He particularly enjoys buying and selling early American coins, including large cents, half cents, two-cent pieces, and three-cent pieces.
During his years in the coin business, Weaver has participated in more than 700-coin shows, gaining valuable insight into many areas of the hobby. His background in marketing and advertising has also helped him determine the best way to present and display the company’s inventory. Customers frequently compliment the clear identification and detailed information provided with the coins offered for sale.
While Weaver’s passion for coins began in childhood, his professional career took him into broadcasting and media sales. He earned bachelor’s degrees in radio and television and journalism and a master’s degree in communications from Morehead State University, where he later worked st the university’s public radio station
In 1980, Weaver moved into advertising sales, first at Lexington radio station WKQQ-FM and later at TeleCable Corporation, where he opened the company’s first local cable advertising sales office. He later held leadership positions in cable advertising with TCI, AT&T, Viamedia, Suddenlink, and Altice. During his cable advertising career, he managed 20 offices, 400 employees, and more than $50 million in revenue across markets stretching from Boston to Seattle. He also served as vice president of sales and marketing at Lexington-based eCampus.com.
A certified sales, coaching, and negotiation trainer, Weaver taught broadcast management at Morehead State University for three years and strategic management at Midway University for one year.
