It’s often interesting to learn how people ultimately find their chosen professions. For new member Lucy Hendricks, it happened quite by accident. After leaving college at age 19, Lucy’s mother offered to pay for her to attend personal training school. Lucy said she had “zero interest” in attending but thought it might help her get in shape and become less introverted. Halfway through the program, she attended a lecture in Louisville where one of the speakers discussed intelligent training and building muscle for people dealing with pain. That area of practice appealed to Lucy, and she set out to learn more about it.
Lucy connected with two people in Lexington who offered her internships. As she developed the necessary skills, she remained aware of her shyness and soft-spoken nature. To become more assertive, Lucy began working at Saul Good restaurant, where she could interact more with the public. That experience helped her develop a confident but not pushy style.
Now a co-owner of Enhancing Life Personal Training in Lexington, which celebrated its 10th anniversary this year, Lucy has worked in the fitness industry for approximately 15 years.
Lucy works with injured people who find themselves in the gap between physical therapy and routine exercise. She explained that, in many cases, people may still be experiencing pain after their physical therapy sessions have ended and therefore feel discouraged from exercising. She recognized a tremendous need for someone to help people navigate this gap without further injuring themselves. In addition to working with individual clients, Lucy also “trains the trainers” by coaching other fitness professionals.
Lucy was born in Guatemala and spent her first 13 years there. She loves hiking and spending time in nature, believing those activities are essential to her mental well-being. She also enjoys spending time with friends and looks forward to becoming more engaged with the Lexington community through Rotary.
