2026-02-24T11:55:20-05:00

When we think of archaeology, we often conjure the image of Indiana Jones in a jungle temple or desert tomb. What if, instead, we see a man at a computer in a lab using high technology to recover the secrets of the past? That is exactly what Dr. Brent Seales does. He has recovered artifacts and information thought last forever. Imagine reading a 1700 year old bible or a 2000 year old scroll or seeing carvings on monoliths hundreds of years old. Brent has and is sharing these treasures with the world. Dr. Seales has been teaching and mentoring students in ...

Rotary Leadership Institute Trains Tomorrow’s Leaders

2026-02-09T13:24:39-05:00

The Rotary Leadership Institute is a critical service to our members as we seek to insure that we will have the leadership we need to ensure Rotary’s future. On Saturday, thirty-three Rotarians from fifteen Rotary clubs in District 6740 braved the low temperatures and uncertain road conditions to complete the first Rotary Leadership Institute for 2026. The Institute was held at the Bluegrass Community and Technical College, Newtown Campus, which joined District 6740 leadership as event co-sponsors. Congratulations to the six Rotarians from our club who received graduation certificates at the end of the day in recognition of their completion of ...

Black History Month: A Century of Black History Commemorations

2026-02-04T15:00:24-05:00

Rotary joins with the larger community in celebrating Black History Month, a time to recognize the role of African Americans in US history. Communities across the country will, in various ways, offer opportunities to learn about the struggles and honor the achievements of African Americans. As noted by the Paul Robeson Cultural Center, “2026 marks an important centennial – 100 years of nationally commemorating Black history. In 1915, Dr. Carter Godwin Woodson and fellow scholars founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History, institutionalizing the teaching, study, and celebration of Black History.” Negro history week was initiated in ...

2026-01-06T10:12:44-05:00

The Rotary Club of Lexington’s annual Holiday party with deserving students from Booker T. Washington Elementary School took place during the last meeting of the year on December 11. Eighteen students were hosted by Rotarians to a delicious lunch of chicken strips, mac and cheese and Christmas cookies. The Holiday Luncheon committee, chaired by Carrie Patterson, provided each student with a gift bag (for their toys), crayons, coloring book, and juice boxes! Several Rotarians, dressed in the Holiday spirit, served as table hosts to make sure each student was well cared for. Before Santa, played wonderfully and enthusiastically by Rotarian ...

Rotary Hits a Winner with Inaugural Pickleball Fundraiser!

2025-12-09T09:49:36-05:00

The Rotary Club of Lexington’s Pickle N Pints fundraiser served up a great night of fun, connection, and easygoing competition. Hosted by PKL Lex and fueled by beer from Country Boy Brewing, the event brought together Rotarians, business leaders, sponsors, and friends around pickleball, pints, and community. One of the most popular parts of the night was the beginner tournament, designed for those who had never played before or had only stepped on a court once or twice. It proved to be the perfect on ramp for new players and a reminder that pickleball really is for everyone. The mix ...

Dec. 4 – Donald “Don” Colliver, Ph.D., P.E

2025-12-09T09:33:52-05:00

Few topics today exceed that of global warming for presenting both factual and political disagreement over whether or not our earth is warming and if it is, why – natural vs. human activities, its impacts, and the best way to address it. A quick look at the NASA website (science.nasa.gov) contains the following rather stark assessment: “There is unequivocal evidence that the earth is warming at an unprecedented rate. Human activity is the principal cause.” Joining Lexington Rotarians this week to dig deeper into this existential topic is Donald “Don” Colliver, Ph.D., P.E. In a presentation entitled Does the Earth Have ...

New Member Deep Dive: Ruth Ann Palumbo

2025-12-01T11:18:30-05:00

It should come as no surprise that Ruth Ann Palumbo has joined the Rotary Club of Lexington as she has spent most of her life in service to others. A native of Lexington, she spent years doing volunteer work (receiving the Governors Volunteer Activist Award in 1989) before running for and winning a seat in the Kentucky House of Representatives, where she served for thirty-four years. During her tenure, Ruth Ann served on numerous committees, chairing the House Economic Development Committee for twenty years, promoting Kentucky’s signature industries and securing funding for Kentucky’s colleges and universities. Ruth Ann is particularly proud ...

Governor Andy Beshear and Our New Kentucky Home

2025-12-09T15:02:08-05:00

The evening of November 12 was a special one for the Rotary Club of Lexington, as over 200 Rotarians, visiting Rotarians, Rotaract members, and guests gathered at The Mane on Main to hear from Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear. Beshear, who proudly noted that he grew up in Lexington, is currently serving his second term as the Commonwealth’s 63rd Governor, having first been elected to that position in 2019. A Democrat, he previously served as Kentucky’s Attorney General and is the son of former Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear. As a Democrat with relatively high approval ratings in a state otherwise run by ...
